8' Kids Row Skiff
« on: March 12, 2010, 09:07:34 AM »
My 5 yr old and I started this lil number last Sunday.  I thought it would be a good father / son project.  I will do just about anything to get out of the house.   :-\

I think I may fiberglass the outside and then paint it Pip.  Not really sure yet.

He was excited to use it Merlin, but it took more than an hour to get it to that point so he will probably lose interest until its time to drop it in and paddle it around.  I guess it was mostly something for me to do. ::)

That's awesome, but It doesn't look like it'll float very well

Fiberglass is fun to work with, I just built a hood for my car using the sheets. Just don't do it in an enclosed garage like I did.

LoL, It's one of those glass bottom boats Arty, can't you see it?

I've never seen the fiberglass sheets Pip,  I always used the cloth that comes on a roll.  Who sells the sheets?  I will try them out.

Vantastic . . . where did you get your sheets?

I would think that a car place would have them that sells auto body repair crap.  I saw (out o the corner of my eye) them used on one of the car shows Ape watches Sunday mornings - the ones with the big boobed chicks talking and not doing any work.

that place has sheets up to 60" wide by whatever yardage you want. i'd def suggest looking into that because then you would only have 2 seams on the outside of the boat, make life a helluva lot easier...

I did get the sheets at a local auto shop that specializes in custom cars and repairs. I know I did look online and found some, but the price was not competitive with the local shop. They also sell them at Carquest, but everything fiberglass related is very expensive there. I went with the sheets because I could get some the same size as the car hood, which made things very easy.

Thanks for the input, gang.  I will see what I can find.  I just don't want to spend more on cloth and resin than I spent on the wood to build the damn thing.  That's not going to be easy.
